How-to: Test Shoes

Task-oriented guides for enabling, configuring, printing, and exporting test shoes.

How do I enable a test shoe on a last?​

  1. Open the shoe-last document and go to the Base step.
  2. Set the Production method to a printed type (3D print: Last or 3D print: Last shell) so the printed test shoe can be generated.
  3. Under Foil (test shoe), turn on Enabled.
  4. Set the Net stabilization select (None / Short / Long) as needed, then pick the 3D Printer under Foil (test shoe) for the output.
  5. Save. The test shoe now generates alongside the last and becomes selectable on the Export step.

How do I set the netto stabilization?​

The Net stabilization controls how much stiffening a Net test shoe (last alone) receives.

  1. In the Base step, make sure Enabled is on under Foil (test shoe).
  2. Open the Net stabilization select.
  3. Choose the amount:
    • None: no added stabilization.
    • Short: a short reinforcement.
    • Long: a longer reinforcement.
  4. Save. The Net test shoe regenerates with the chosen stabilization. It has no effect on the Gross test shoe, which is fused with the midsole.

How do I add the midsole to a test shoe (bruto)?​

A Gross test shoe is the last fused with the midsole, so a midsole must be generated first.

  1. In the Base step, under Midsole design, turn on Enabled, choose a Production method (Milling: Midsole or 3D Printing: Midsole), and pick the 3D Printer.
  2. Under Foil (test shoe), turn on Enabled and pick the 3D Printer.
  3. Open the Midsoles step and set the midsole up (Trimline pattern, Bottom design, thickness zones, and the rest).
  4. Save. On the Export step the product list now includes Test shoe Gross next to Test shoe Net. Gross is only offered while midsoles are enabled.

How do I print a test shoe?​

  1. In the Base step, confirm Enabled is on under Foil (test shoe) and the 3D Printer is selected (for Gross, also enable Enabled under Midsole design).
  2. Open the Export step.
  3. In the product selection, choose Test shoe Net or Test shoe Gross.
  4. Send it to the printer: Produce now prints immediately, or Place in production adds it to the production queue.
  5. If credit/token confirmation is enabled, confirm the payment dialog.

How do I export a test shoe?​

  1. Finish the last (and, for Gross, the midsole) and open the Export step.
  2. In the product selection, pick Test shoe Net or Test shoe Gross. Gross appears only when midsoles are enabled.
  3. Choose your route:
    • Export writes the STL to a chosen destination.
    • Export screenshots saves JPEGs of the current view.
    • Save order packages an .l3z file, or Order sends it to a configured outsource partner.

It printed a solid model instead. What went wrong?​

The Foil (test shoe) options only appear once a default machine for the test shoe is configured in Manager. With no machine set (and midsoles off), the shoe last is the only product that qualifies, so the Select product picker is skipped and the shoe last is produced straight away, whether you clicked Produce now or Place in production.

To fix it, set a default machine for the test shoe in Manager. Clicking Produce now (or Place in production) on the Export step then shows the Select product picker with Foil (test shoe) - Net and, if midsoles are enabled, Foil (test shoe) - Gross. Nothing is preselected, so pick the option you want. Selecting nothing and confirming cancels the export.

Where do I find a test shoe I sent to production?​

  1. Make sure the test shoe was added to production with Place in production on the Export step.
  2. Return to Manager with the Open folder button.
  3. Open the Production tab.
  4. The production is at the end of the list.
