Combining Foot & Imprint Scans

There are two ways to bring foot and imprint scans into LutraCAD. Both capture two scans per side, the foot in the imprint and the imprint itself, which you then merge into a single 3D scan.

Method 1: iPhone and iPad App​

  1. Open the app and select the Imprint and foot scanning mode.
  2. Scan the foot inside the foambox.
  3. Perform a second scan to capture the imprint in the foambox.
  4. Upload the scans to the Cloud.
  5. In LutraCAD, click Cloud import to download all scans.

Method 2: Software Import​

  1. In a project, click 3D scan in the sidebar.
  2. Choose the Imprint and foot mode, then use the Import imprint buttons to pick the foot and imprint scan for each side.

File Selection

Ensure you select the correct files for each foot and its corresponding imprint.

Merging Scans​

  1. In the project view, locate the Merge 2 scans row.
  2. Click on the Merge 2 scans row.
  3. Click Merge on the side you want to start with.
Scan Preparation

The Merge 2 scans row appears because the files are not yet combined into a single 3D scan. This step is crucial for creating an accurate model.

Foot Scan Alignment​

  1. In LutraCAD, you'll see the foot scan first.
  2. Click along the top side of the foambox around the foot to place at least 3 markers for alignment.
  3. Press Enter to continue.

Imprint Scan Alignment​

  1. For the second scan (the imprint), click along the top side of the foambox around the foot to place at least 3 markers.
  2. Press Enter to continue.

Fine-tuning Alignment​

  1. LutraCAD will automatically align the two parts.
  2. You can manually move or rotate parts for better alignment.
  3. Click on a part and use the action buttons to remove unnecessary sections with the Clip button (for example, excess leg area).

Settings​

Two controls on the right set how much of each part is kept before merging:

Imprint (mm)How much to clip off the imprint part (part B).

Higher values clip away more of that part.

Finding the Right Balance

Experiment with these settings to achieve the optimal balance between foambox visibility and scan detail.

Exporting the Combined Scan​

  1. Navigate to the Export tab.
  2. Review the combined scan.
  3. If satisfied with the result, click Save. If not, go back to the first tab.
Project Update

After processing both sides, a new "3D scan" item will be added to the project.

Post-Processing​

If needed, you can further refine the scan using the Repair function, which is explained on a separate page.
